London Day Trips

While London is a destination all on its own, there are many other attractions in the area to visit.  If you want to take some time to explore other areas, here are some ideas about nice day trips, or perhaps a leisurely weekend trip.

Warwick Castle
See peacocks, climb towers, and meander the fortifications of Warwick Castle.  This well-preserved castle is reachable by train and the food in the cafeteria makes staying for lunch a tempting option.

Hampton Court
The current palace of Hampton Court was built by Thomas Wolsey, expanding upon the building that was already on the site.  When it became known as the finest palace in England, Wolsey shrewdly presented it as a gift to the jealous King, Henry VIII.  It is located just up the river from downtown London and is a very quick trip via ferry.  The building and its gardens are amazingly well preserved and it’s a fascinating attraction.

Stonehenge
Near Salisbury, Stonehenge attracts many visitors and is conveniently within reach of London.  It’s an hour an a half by train and can be reached by car if you don’t mind driving on the left side of the road.   It’s a bit expensive and you can’t get very close, but it is Stonehenge, after all, so it’s difficult to pass up.

Stratford-Upon-Avon
Come to see Shakespeare’s house and visit the church that is the playwright’s final resting place.  Stay to watch a play in the evening, performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company.  For non-Shakespeare attractions, see the Butterfly Conservatory or Teddy Bear Museum.

Brighton
Take a day to head down to the seashore during your next trip to London. Tour the royal pavilion wander along the Brighton Pier.  This ocean playground has art galleries and boutiques and can be a welcome respite from the big city.

Oxford
Visiting a school you don’t go to may seem an odd choice for a vacation destination, but it’s actually a fascinating stop.  Each college has its own unique character and the dining halls and libraries look like they’re right out of Harry Potter.  The Pitt Rivers Museum is also a great place to see what museums looked like a hundred years ago.

Bath
Hot springs have made Bath a site of relaxation for many, starting with the Celts and Romans.  Come to see the ruins of intricate Roman baths and temple dedicated to Minerva.  It’s about an hour an a half outside of London and worth the trip.
