Built around 1500 BC, Gournia is a Minoan settlement that can still be visited. There is evidence that people lived in the area as early as 2300 BC. It was once associated with a palace, like many of the Minoan cities, yet the palace has been destroyed. The town was left surprisingly preserved and while it doesn't quite have the splendor of the large palaces, it is a great way to see how the Minoan people lived. The site is open every day except Monday from 8:30 to 3 and when we were there, it cost 2 Euro.
